The book “Intermediate Communities, an Opportunity for Politics,” edited by Franco Bassanini, Tiziano Treu and Giorgio Vittadini, examines the role of political parties in democracies, highlighting their increasing difficulties in engaging citizens. The possibility of alternative forms of participation is considered, and the importance of intermediary communities, particularly the Third Sector, in maintaining the links fundamental to a healthy democracy is emphasized.

Within the volume, Gianluca Salvatori and Jacopo Sforzi have written Chapter XI, entitled “Social Economy and New Forms of Civic Participation.” The authors explore how communities can redefine political participation through initiatives such as Community Enterprises, Solidarity Emporiums, FabLabs, Collaborative Covenants, Community Hubs and Food Coops, proposing an economic model geared toward the general interest.
