Statistical report on the social economy in the European Union

28 February 2025

The latest statistical report on the social economy in the European Union, carried out by EURICSE and CIRIEC with the support of the European Commission within the framework of the Social Economy Action Plan, estimates that the social economy sector employs 11.5 million people within the EU. These workers are distributed across 4.3 million enterprises and entities, of which 97.7% belong to the four traditional families of the social economy: cooperatives, mutual societies, associations, and foundations. Among these, 246,000 entities are classified as social enterprises.
The report was presented on February 7th in Brussels, during an event hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). After the institutional speeches, our researchers Giulia Galera and Chiara Carini presented some of the main findings of the research.
