Enterprising Communities in Italy

26 May 2025

Since 2020, EURICSE has been carrying out the research project ‘Le Comunità Intraprendenti,’ an initiative dedicated to exploring and valorising the potential of local experiences that strengthen social cohesion, promote environmental sustainability and reduce socio-economic inequalities in marginal territories, such as rural, mountain and island areas.

As the project enter in a new phase, the focus will be on four key areas:

  • the replicability of models developed in urban contexts;
  • the active role of young people in social innovation processes;
  • the community management of common goods;
  • the value of new energy, food and cooperative networks.

2025 promises to be a year full of stimuli and new opportunities for growth for EURICSE, which is working on multiple strategic fronts. Ongoing activities include working on updating of the Database of Intrapreneurial Communities, for increasingly accurate mapping of local realities, the drafting of new in-depth reports, the organisation of events at national level aimed at sharing knowledge and best practices, and the development of support tools aimed at foster bottom-up development processes and inclusive, sustainable growth models.

Through these initiatives, EURICSE confirms its commitment to strengthening the social economy and supporting the development of marginal communities, actively contributing to the construction of more resilient and cohesive territories.

Intrapreneurial Communities in Italy

Launched in 2020, thanks to the support of Fondazione con il Sud, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CRC, Fondosviluppo FVG Spaand ACI – Alleanza delle Cooperative Italiane, EURICSE has launched a first research phase phase aimed at mapping the main Intrapreneurial Communities in Italy.

This initial phase identified local initiatives capable of foresting social cohesion, innovation and sustainable development in rural, mountain and island areas, enhancing the role of communities as as drivers of bottom-up change.

The objective was to provide a comprehensive picture of the most significant experiences, highlighting replicable models and best practices capable of stimulating inclusive and resilient growth.

This mapping serves as the foundation for the subsequent phases of analysis and development, aimed at strengthening the social and economic fabric of Italy’s marginal territories.
