Renewable Energy Communities in Italy: a new research report

30 June 2026

Against the backdrop of the energy transition and the transformation of local development models, Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are playing an increasingly significant role in social and organisational innovation processes. EURICSE’s new research report, “Energy Communities in Italy: Current Status and New Prospects”, provides an up-to-date analysis of the phenomenon, examining its prevalence, characteristics and outlook at both national and European levels.
The study, carried out as part of the 2023–2025 Programme Agreement between EURICSE and the Autonomous Province of Trento, maps 597 Renewable Energy Communities that are active or in the process of being established in Italy, analysing their governance, organisational models and funding sources. The report includes a focus on the Trentino region and sets out policy recommendations to support the development of RECs as social infrastructures capable of generating economic, environmental and collective value.
