Euricse mentioned in the UN Report on social and solidarity economy

17 October 2024

We are proud to share with you the United Nations Secretary-General’s Report “Promoting the social and solidarity economy for sustainable development”, based on UN General Assembly Resolution 77/281. The Report, submitted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), as co-chairs of the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE), is an important document that both affects and reflects the work of Euricse, which since 2019 has been an active participant  in the Task Force itself.

In discussing the progress made and challenges encountered in promoting the social and solidarity economy, the Report several times explicitly recognizes Euricse’s contribution in creating a deeper understanding of this world. The value of the Institute’s work emerges not only in terms of the elaboration of comprehensive statistical data, but also in its success in creating networks and channels for reflection on the SSE and its transformative potential in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals.

It is precisely within the framework of quantitative and qualitative research that the Report cites the statistical research project on the social economy in Europe in the period 2023-2024 conducted by Euricse together with CIRIEC International. The World Cooperative Monitor, a study conducted by the International Cooperative Alliance with the scientific support of Euricse, which has been analyzing the size and characteristics of the world’s largest 300 cooperative enterprises for more than a decade, is also explicitly referenced in the Report.

The Report also emphasizes the importance of the European projects Blueprint on Work Integration Social Enterprises and European Social Innovation Campus, in which Euricse is a partner and that aim to promote training and skills development within social economy organizations.

The publication of this Report is thus an important acknowledgement not only of Euricse’s positioning and the work that it has done over the years thanks also to the support of its Members, but also of the need to further expand awareness of the potential and impact of the social economy – a goal that remains at the core of our work, and for which we are grateful to have you by our side.
