Social economy (SE) organizations are, by their very nature, different from other economic actors both in terms of their mission – which excludes or assigns secondary importance to the generation and distribution of profit in favor of the pursuit of meeting the needs of a particular category of members or of the entire community – and their democratic governance. The metrics traditionally used to quantify the contribution of enterprises in terms of economic value produced can only partially capture the real contribution of SE organizations to the well-being of a territory. As most existing international standards often do not meet the specificities and needs of social economy organizations, the dialogue opened by the Industrial Strategy can offer an opportunity to remedy this shortcoming, by introducing criteria that are consistent with the specific characteristics of the social economy and thus providing an important tool to support EU policies.
