The first objective of this Third Euricse Report on cooperation in Italy is to reconstruct, as accurately as the available data allow, both the overall picture of the economic and employment dimensions of the cooperative sector in 2013 – the last year for which a sufficient database is available – and the dynamics experienced during the three-year period 2011-2013.

The information sources used in this chapter are the Aida-Bureau van Dijk database and the INPS archives. Balance sheet data extracted from the Aida database are used below, first, to reconstruct the economic size, in terms of value of production, of first-tier cooperatives (excluding cooperative credit banks) and cooperative consortiums for the year 2013, and secondly, to delve into their dynamics during 2011-2013 in terms of value generated (value of production and employee income) and degree of capitalization.

Information on the employment relevance of cooperation as of 2013 and its trend between 2011 and 2013, on the other hand, is derived from data made available by INPS.

This paper is part of the Third Euricse Report | 2015 Cooperative Economy. Relevance, evolution and new frontiers of Italian cooperation.
