Real economic systems are populated by families of companies that are structurally different from one another, depending on who formally owns them and, therefore, manages them and defines their objectives. However, profit maximisation must be only one of many objectives that can be pursued and are pursued. The purpose of this volume, which draws on the latest research carried out by Carlo Borzaga, is therefore not to present and discuss the different representations or theories of the enterprise, but rather to reflect on the existence of a plurality of forms of enterprise, their distinctive characteristics, determinants and consequences in terms of economic performance and social relevance. To develop this argument, joint-stock companies are examined, with particular attention to the forms that have been less considered until now: cooperatives, mutual societies and social enterprises, for which, among other things, an attempt is made to predict future developments.
