WP 141 | 26 Cooperatives in the Twin Transition: Multistakeholder governance, Technology adoption and Risk of strategic failure
This paper investigates the adoption of digital and green technologies among industrial cooperatives in the context of the twin transition. Despite growing policy attention, limited empirical evidence exists on how cooperatives are facing the twin transition. We analyse the determinants of adoption of 15 core technologies identified by the European Union, focusing on multistakeholder governance, managerial perceptions, and structural characteristics. Using original survey data from 61 cooperatives in North-Eastern Italy, we estimate a logit model with cross-sectional data. Results indicate that multistakeholder governance increases the probability of technology adoption and moderates the effect of managerial perceptions, mitigating the risk of strategic failure. Managerial perceptions are also found to be significant predictors of adoption. These findings highlight the role of governance openness and provide new empirical evidence on how governance models shape the implementation of the twin transition within cooperatives.
